Track Laborer Helps Improve Great Northwest Railroad
APRIL 2025 — What can I do to make it better? That’s the question Track Laborer Torey Lamar asks himself every day while working on the Great Northwest Railroad (GRNW) in Lewiston, Idaho.
Since joining the Watco short line in 2022, he’s become an instrumental part of the maintenance of way team and a founding member of their Team Safety & Improvement Committee (TSIC).
Several improvements have been made on the GRNW, thanks in part to Lamar. After noticing team members frequently going inside the depot to cool down last summer, he suggested adding a lean-to shelter to the property. Once his suggestion was approved by General Manager Jerick Staker, Lamar and two other teammates volunteered to construct the cooling station complete with a water misting system.
Repainting the depot, along with the maintenance of way and mechanical buildings, was another recent suggestion made by Lamar. After getting the go-ahead to start this project, he led the effort, from purchasing the necessary supplies to coordinating volunteers.
GRNW Roadmaster Sean Crowe works closely with Lamar as his direct supervisor. “Torey is devoted to the Great Northwest Railroad. He is always looking to find ways to make this place and his team better.”
Despite his busy schedule, Lamar also finds time to develop new skills. This year, he earned his welding certificate. And in 2024, he obtained his commercial driver’s license.
Staker said, “Torey is the definition of a great teammate. He truly makes a difference here on the Great Northwest.”
